About Lucie’s Lambs
What is your name, and the name of your business?
I’m Lucie Trapp, founder of Lucie’s Lambs. Lucie’s Lambs is a small family run partnership. We aim to provide high quality, tasty lamb boxes reared to Pasture For Life Association principles.
Where are you based?
How did you get the idea for your business?
I don’t come from a farming background and so getting into agriculture after finishing my degree has been a challenge. I’m extremely passionate about sustainable agriculture and it’s difficult to impose my ways of farming onto other people’s farms. I tried to be a farm manager on a grass-based beef and sheep farm and hated it!
I’m lucky that my parents have some land and so my dad and I decided to get some sheep and see if we could make a go of it. We set up the business when I was in 3rd year at university, lambing and writing my dissertation at the same time was great fun! We’re now in year 2 of trading and its going better than ever- we sold out one batch of lamb in 24hrs at the start of lockdown, that was pretty crazy! I’ve just bought some more ewes, to keep up with demand so we should have around 40-45 lambs in April 2021!
What is your favourite part of your business?
Lambing will always be my favourite aspect of my business. Its stressful and its long days making sure all the sheep and lambs are happy and healthy but completely worth it. I also love delivering my boxes to customers, it always makes me smile when people receive their boxes and love my product.
What is your favourite product you sell?
I love our shoulders of lamb slow roasted but our legs of lamb are most popular. This year I’m experimenting with curing lamb skins and I’ve really enjoyed that process.
What is one thing we don’t know about you?
I’m a dairy addict, my family often joke I can support the UK dairy industry on my own! I love a glass of cold whole milk.
What is the biggest thing you have learnt whilst in business?
You can do anything when you put your mind to it
Lots of planning is required
You can say no, even when you think you can’t.
What one thing could you not live without?
My family’s help and support, especially my dad who is also my business partner. My dad repairs all the fences and helps out whenever I need an extra pair of hands, I’d be lost without him! Scout, my border collie, she’s only a year old but is already coming into her own helping get the sheep in!
Which is your favourite event of the year?
Either Badminton or Edenbridge and Oxted Ag Show. Both have great memories and always a great day out with friends and family.
Shout out to your favourite brand
Fairfax and favour, my collection is growing!
What is your favourite animal?
Sheep, I love all their different personalities
If you could be an animal for a day, what would you be?
Definitely a dog, you get to sleep, eat and have cuddles all day and then get taken for long walks.
